oldier dies while taking the APFT
Fort Jackson, S.C. – The Fort Jackson soldier who collapsed Thursday morning after
finishing the final event of a physical fitness test, a two-mile run, died of hyperthermia,
according to the Richland County Coroner’s office.

Sgt. 1st Class Clayton Z. Hughes, 35, from Delta Company, 120th Adjutant General
Battalion (Reception), was completing the final lap of the run and as he neared the
finish line he began to struggle with his balance. After crossing the finish line he began
to show signs of being a heat casualty. Cadre on scene initiated emergency
procedures for heat related injuries and contacted EMS.

He was immediately evaluated and transported to Providence Medical Center for
further diagnosis and care.  He was pronounced dead at 7:56 a.m.

Hughes was attending the Senior Leader Course, a leadership course for senior
non-commissioned officers.

The incident remains under investigation. See also Fort Riley Soldier Dies
